UPDATE: Small garbage fire causes evacuation of commercial building in Penticton

Update 2:40 p.m.:

A small rubbish fire caused a commercial building in downtown Penticton to evacuate on Wednesday afternoon.

The fire led to reports of smoke and a response from the local fire department and RCMP.

Ellis Street is still closed around the Elks Club building on the lot nearby.

A fire has reportedly broken out in the basement of the Ellis Professional Building in Penticton.

Calls were made around 2:15 p.m. of smoke coming from below the Shoppers Simply Pharmasave, located on the ground floor of the building, at the intersection of Ellis Street and Wade Avenue.

The Penticton Fire Department and RCMP are on the scene. Traffic is currently closed at the intersection.

It is not known what may have caused the fire, and whether anyone has been injured.
