With class back in session, RCMP in Penticton are reminding residents to be aware of traffic laws and pedestrians in school zones.

As of Tuesday, Sept. 6, school zone traffic laws are back in effect, including a speed limit of 30 km/h from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Return to school and traffic safety are top priorities for the RCMP,” said James Grandy from the Penticton detachment.

“We can all take preventative measures to make sure children are safe when walking to and from school. As part of this initiative, police will be actively visible in school zone areas enforcing speed and traffic laws.”

Penticton RCMP posted tips for both students and motorists this week, in response to the start of the 2022-2023 school year:

• Students should walk on sidewalks and use marked cross-walks whenever possible

• Students should walk their bikes across intersections and crosswalks and use bike lanes when available, as well as look both ways before crossing and wear bright coloured clothing

• Motorists must yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and watch for bikes, crossing guards, school busses and children running

Bylaw in Penticton, meanwhile, released a statement of its own prior to the start of the new year, warning residents about their increased presence in school zones during the first weeks of September.
