Similkameen Family Literacy wrapped up its sixth annual August Day Camp with three very different renderings of the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood.
The youngsters, aged eight to 12 years, prepared their performances with writing and acting exercises under the direction of Bob McAtamney of the Cawston Players.
Similkameen Family Literacy co-ordinator, Dave Cursons has presented the day camp for young actors since 2007.
This year, the program was pleased to welcome Yasmine John-Thorpe of Penticton Writers and Publishers representing the Vancouver Sun “Raise A Reader” program. Raise a Reader books were awarded to camp participants along with a copy of the current anthology of teen and pre-teen Okanagan writers, called “Gems”.

After final performances on Friday morning, Day Camp certificates were awarded along with a special Diamond Jubilee pin celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s 60th year on the throne.
Provincial Gaming proceeds fund the day camp and other Similkameen Family Literacy programs which include a volunteer One-to-One Reading program, conducted at Cawston Primary School.
