The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen gave the first three readings to spend $75,000 to complete the Similkameen Trail project in Cawston.

The majority of the funds will go towards the installation of a bridge over Keremeos Creek. The site for the bridge has been chosen and was undergoing an environmental impact review in March.

Some of the spending will go towards other outstanding work that’s required before the trail is completed, such as trail surfacing, landscape rehabilitation and access controls.

The $75,000 will come from the Area B (Cawston) Community Works Reserve.

Separate from the bridge, completion of the the trail is waiting on negotiations with landowners along the pathway who have expanded their property onto the Crown land of the old railbed the trail is built on. Those negotiations are being handled by the Ministry of Transportation.

The Similkameen Trail works project started in 2021 and has been funded through gas tax and the Rural Dividend Fund.

Because the project covers recreational infrastructure and local roads and bridges, it is eligible for the Community Works Gas Tax Program.
