2 sites proposed for new Summerland pool

Core project comes at cost of around $38M

Two locations have been proposed for a new aquatic and recreation facility for Summerland in an effort to replace the community’s aging structure.

The existing Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre, on Kelly Avenue, was constructed in 1976 and while it has been well maintained, municipal staff have said the facility is now at the end of its serviceable life.

The replacement calls for a core program with a net area of 2,666 square metres for a six-lane lap pool, a leisure pool, a hot tub, a fitness centre, multi-purpose recreation rooms, a youth and family room, washrooms and change rooms and administration and office space.

Optional enhancement could include a community gymnasium and a childcare centre.

At a public open house on Nov. 16, Glen Stokes of Carscadden Stokes McDonald Architects, the lead consultant of the project, said the two sites are the existing location on Kelly Avenue and a new location adjacent to the Summerland Arena and Curling Club on Jubilee Road East.

If the Kelly Avenue location is chosen, a two-store building would be constructed on the footprint of the existing building. This would involve closing the facility for 18 months to two years so the existing building could be demolished and a new building could be erected.

In addition, while the core facility could be constructed, there would not be sufficient room for additional amenities which have been proposed.

The Jubilee Road East location would use waste heat from the arena to help heat the swimming pool. The location also provides enough space for additional features.

Because this unit would be in front of the arena, parking would be reconfigured, with new parking to be located beside the arena and behind the Timber Mart building.

Building at the Kelly Avenue location would have an estimated cost of $38.0 million for the core facility while building at the Jubilee Road East location is expected to cost $37.4 million for the core facility.

The gymnasium would cost an additional $11.2 million and the childcare facility would cost an additional $2.7 million.

The municipality has requested community input on this project until Nov. 29.
