Preventative safety measures are being put into place as the weather begins to get warmer with summer right around the corner.

The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) will enact Category 3 fire restrictions on reserve lands and traditional territories, effective at 7 a.m. on June 1.

Restrictions include:

  • Material concurrently in three or more piles, each not exceeding two metres in height and three metres in width
  • Material in one or more piles, each exceeding 2 metres in height or 3 metres in width
  • One or more windows, not exceeding 200 metres in length or 15 metres in width
  • Grass or stubble over an area exceeding 2,000 square metres

"LSIB will continue in strategic collaboration with our neighbouring governments, public safety agencies, industry and the public, to make sure the safety of the tmxʷulaxʷ (lands), tmixʷ (all living things) and sqilxʷ (people) remain the first priority," LSIB stated. "Please join us in these efforts."

To report a wildfire or fire contrary to current restrictions, contact the LSIB Band Office at 250-499-5528.
