It will be a busy year for the Osoyoos Airport.

On April 13, council approved allowing the Wine Country Racing Association (WCRA) to resume using the airport tarmac for their drag races.

The WCRA had taken a break in 2020 due to COVID-19, but asked for approval for several scheduled race days in 2021.

The agenda for April 27 included a request to allow the Osoyoos Model Aviation Club (OMAC) permission to fly from the airport.

The Penticton Model Aviation Club already flies out of the Osoyoos Airport lands every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. This would allow OMAC to use the airport on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The recommendation from town staff would be to allow OMAC use of the airport on the days that the Penticton club isn’t there, and when there aren’t races scheduled for the WCRA.

The WCRA requested the weekends of May 15-16, June 5-6, June 19-20, Sept. 11-12 and Sept. 25-26 for their regular race days.

Per previous agreements between the town and WCRA, the association is responsible for clean-up after race days, and pays the town a third of the net ticket sales and participants’ fees.

Due to all of the activity at the airport, the staff also noted that for 2022 they may request adding a charge for the use of the airport in order to cover the costs for coordinating and approval by staff.
