Construction is set to begin in August on Penticton’s new outdoor ice rink.

Starting on Aug. 1, the parking spaces outside the city hall will not be available for use during the day.

The new permanent washroom facilities are set to begin construction in August, with the preparation of the area for the rink starting in September and followed by the concrete being poured in October.

The plan is to have the rink ready to be opened in mid-December.

Due to the construction, the city has announced changes to the layout of the parking lot, including paving it and adding landscaping, trees and drainage infrastructure. There will also be bicycle parking installed as part of the redesigned parking lot.

“The new outdoor skating rink will soon become an iconic amenity in our downtown, but in order for that vision to be realized, the chosen site – a parking lot – had to be adjusted and reconfigured,“ said Penticton’s general manager of community services, Anthony Haddad. “We thank the public for their understanding and cooperation as these changes are introduced.”

People who currently rent one of the public parking spaces in the lot will be able to rent space at either the Ellis Street parking lot or the Nanaimo Avenue lot. The city also noted that there are privately owned parking lots with monthly options available within short walking distance.

The city is paying for the changes and has also applied for a grant from the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative. That grant, if approved, would go towards both the rink and the other amenities around it.
