In the next Children’s Showcase instalment, Indigenous storytellers spin a tale of an old and powerful spirit that inhabits a feast dish.

Coming to the Cleland Theatre on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. is Axis Theatre’s production of Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish by Joseph A. Dandurand.

The story is from the Kwantlen village of Squa’lets, about Th’owxiya, an old and powerful spirit. Her dish holds beautiful foods from around the world but be careful, stealing from her is a dangerous business.

When Th’owxiya catches a hungry mouse, Kw’atel, stealing a piece of cheese she demands two child spirits be brought for her to eat or else she will eat Kw’atel’s whole family.

Desperate to save her family, Kw’atel sets forth on an intense journey gaining knowledge, understanding and forgiveness along the way.

“This is a truly incredible performance brought to us by one of Canada’s top theatre companies, Axis Theatre,” said Melanie Walden, Children’s Showcase organizer in a news release. “We are so fortunate to have an opportunity to see this beautiful and engaging Indigenous story from Kwantlen heritage. It’s really wonderful learning and sharing opportunity for all.”

Tickets are $12 and are available in advance at Tumbleweed Gallery, Penticton Arts Council office, Penticton Art Gallery, Prague Café, Oliver Veterinary Hospital, The Beanery (Summerland) or online at Eventbrite.
