With beautiful blue skies and a shining sun, almost 70 people of all ages came down to Keremeos’ Pine Park to celebrate the official grand opening of the disc golf course on Sept. 10.
The day saw families come down from across the Similkameen and Okanagan valley.
The course is designed to be fully accessible and open for anyone to try out, with kids as young as four having their turn as well as a 93-year-old who came out to the park for the afternoon.
“I was really pushing for the youth to come out, because everyone can play,” said Dion Eden, who designed the course.
It was a promising show of support for the course, which was designed to be fully accessible. One individual with Down syndrome and his caretaker also took on the course.
In addition to taking turns tackling the nine hole course, there were additional fun and games for everyone who came down.
Local businesses donated prizes for a variety of competitions along the course such as the longest skip off a concrete section on one hole or longest roller on another, as well as for events like the Ring of Fire, or the mini-disc golf throw.
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen and the Similkameen Rec Centre were also at the park, with the physical activity trailer out for the kids to play with other activities than just disc golf.
Eden said that he hopes that the local schools take advantage of the course to incorporate it into their activities.
