Box theatre releases creative power

Similkameen Family Literacy presents a one-week theatre camp for kids seven to 12 years.

Big Boxes full of important stories will be this year’s fare as Similkameen Family Literacy presents a one-week theatre camp for kids seven to 12 years.

It happens at The Keremeos Grist Mill and Gardens from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, August 15-19.

Grownups are welcome to attend to help out as the kids manage an appliance box sized theatre of their own.

Inside the box go sets, lights, sounds and whatever the youngster’s imagination and the materials on hand permit.

Each youngster will be supported in developing their own 60 to 90 second piece of story theatre.

Then, it’s show time!

“From pirates to princesses, fortune tellers to flamenco dancers and space aliens to jungle explorers, the play will be whatever the box theatre manager decides”, says Dave Cursons, local Family Literacy co-ordinator.

Cursons is collecting heavy cardboard containers of the sort used to ship appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers and ranges.  Donors can arrange cardboard box pick-up through 250-499-2352 Local 107.

Registration for Box Theatre is limited.

To pre-register call Lower Similkameen Community Services 8 to noon, Monday to Friday at 250-499-2352.  Ask for Cheri Mitchell.

The goal of Similkameen Family Literacy is to advance the enjoyment and good use of language in heard, spoken, read and written communication for all ages.
