The City of Penticton will soon be flying the blue-and-yellow flag of Ukraine — as soon as one can be found.

Coun. James Miller proposed the city raise the Ukraine flag after praising the community’s recent show of support at the Ukraine fundraiser hosted by the Barking Parrot.

“Just through donations for the barbecue they took in $26,000,” said Miller. “They also had to turn away probably just as many peoples as got in, so there’s definitely a true love and support of the people of the Ukraine.”

Mayor John Vassilaki supported the idea and called for flying the flag as soon as one could be found.

Other communities in the Okanagan, including Kelowna and Vernon, have also taken to flying the Ukrainian flag recently in their own shows of support.

Currently, the city has been unable to find a flag that will fit the city’s flag poles.

According to city staff, so far four local sign shops have been contacted already, and the city’s procurement manager has also been looking but unable to find a flag of the right size.

“We will continue to exhaust all options, both local and external, and will install the flag as soon as possible,” reads the email from city staff in response to the Western’s question.
