Five street banner designs have been selected to be displayed in Summerland this year.

In March, the Summerland Community Arts Council put out a call to artists for the 2023 Street Banner Project. Artists of all ages were invited to submit original, full colour designs based on this year’s theme of The Four Elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire.

This theme called upon artists to share their interpretations of those elements and how they are represented in the community.

The arts council received funding from the municipality for this project.

Artists submitted a total of 18 original banner designs.

The street banner project is a juried program with the Summerland Art Club lending their expertise to grade the banners on a scale of originality and creativity, quality of presentation, uniqueness of style and degree to which the design reflects the theme and the effectiveness of the design once installed.

The Summerland Art Club then selected five designs to be commissioned as banners that will hang from lamp standards in Summerland.

The chosen submissions were created by Linda Lovisa, Leanne Strachan, Pam Johnson, Jenny Lewis and Elizabeth Houghton.

The Summerland Community Arts Council will hold a banner reception at a later date.
