South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers has come up with a creative way to raise funds for their non-profit organization during the pandemic.

Crime Stoppers receives no government funding and relies solely on donations to operate and pay rewards for information that leads to the arrest of individuals or the recovery of property.

Since 1992, South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers has recovered over $14 million in drugs and $2 million worth of stolen property, according to a news release sent out by the organization March 4.

The organization was unable to hold its annual fundraiser dinner and live auction in 2020 due to COVID-19 and does not look like the dinner and auction will be held in 2021 either.

As a new way to raise needed funding, Crime Stoppers has partnered with the UPS store in Penticton’s Martin Plaza at 437 Martin Street.

To raise money for Crime Stoppers, residents are asked to box or bundle up their unwanted documents and papers and bring them to the UPS store during the month of March for shredding.

UPS will share the net proceeds with the South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers.

“It is a win-win for everyone, in that you safely and securely get rid of your unwanted documents and at the same time help to keep your community safe by helping to fund South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers’s initiatives and programs,” reads the organization’s press release.
