A Penticton-based credit union is taking a stand against identity theft by educating people on how to properly shred their personal documents.
The South Okanagan Events Centre parking lot will be home to the “Shred It and Forget It” event on May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., organized by Valley First in partnership with the SOEC and local paper destruction company, Okanagan Shredding.
“Identity theft continues to be one of the most common types of financial fraud and it is as important as ever to educate consumers on ways to protect themselves from becoming victims,” the credit union said in a press release.
The public is invited to bring their personal documents for secure on-site shredding while supporting local food banks.
“The Penticton Blue Army will be on-hand to collect non-perishable food items and cash donations in support of the Penticton Salvation Army Food Bank and Feed the Valley,” it adds.
The event will end either at 2:30 p.m. or when the truck of shredded documents is full.
