Those interested in creating sculptures, competing against others and taking home grand prizes will have an opportunity this April thanks to the Penticton Art Gallery.

It’s being dubbed as “Sculpture Day” and it’s bound to get the creative juices flowing for many on April 2 during the inaugural Ignite the Arts Festival.

From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Okanagan Lake Park, people are invited to form sculpture teams of up to eight people and compete against others in a “multigenerational” contest.

The contest was added to the festival’s event list this week, as announced by the Penticton Art Gallery and local public art advisor Robin Robertson.

Teams are asked to bring materials like wood, metal discarded furniture, sand, rocks, wire and concrete to use when creating their “most innovative work,” the gallery said in a statement.

“The team and all materials must be at Okanagan Park for assembly by noon,” it continued.

“Teams will have three and a half hours to assemble their sculptures and all entries must have a title.”

A panel of judges will determine the winner of the contest at 3:45 p.m. with a ceremony honouring the select team expected to follow shortly after.

Before the winner of the contest is announced, the public will have an opportunity to view all of the teams’ finished sculptures.

The inaugural edition of the Ignite the Arts Festival kicks off on March 25, with 1,500 people and 300 artists expected to be engaged in all of the happenings over the course of a nine-day period.

“Sculpture Day” on April 2 will proceed one day before the festival is scheduled to wrap up.

Each registered sculpture team must have one child and one adult, the gallery added.

To register a team for the event, people are asked to view the gallery’s event form.
