Close to 100 runners braved the cold on Saturday to come out for the eighth annual Santa Rec Run in Penticton.
“We had a great turnout, we were happy to see how many people came out,” said Lyndie Hill, one of the organizers of the run.
The course was reversed this year to give runners a warm start and finish, going from Hoodoo Adventures down the lakeshore and over to Loco Landing before coming back. This year’s race took place once again in the light of day, both due to the cold weather, and the other big event of the day.
“The Pink in the Rink is on tonight for the Vees, and we didn’t want people to have to choose between the two,” said Hill. “We wanted people to be able to support their event and ours.”
The rec run is a fundraiser for the Youth Outdoor Recreation Society, and while this year’s total isn’t known yet, in previous years they have brought in a couple thousand for the program.

This year’s daytime run isn’t likely to happen again next year, with a return to a post-sunset schedule to better show off the course.
“Next year we really want to light up the lake shore,” said Hill. “What we could really see is that the whole community gets involved. All the schools get involved. We build these big fantastic decorations and they’re all along the beach, and we have this massive light up of the lakeshore, with Santa hats along it.”
