February’s Rotary Club of Penticton Sunrise Student of the Month Rachel Brown is
A Grade 11 student at Princess Margaret Secondary School in Penticton, Brown enjoys her studies, theatre performances and athletics.
Outside of the classroom, Brown was an organizer of Remembrance Day festivities and quickly pivoted from collecting money for Christmas Hampers to selling Dry Soup Bags because of the COVID-19 regulations and safety concerns.
Brown has enjoyed her years of theatre where she played ensemble in Mama Mia in Grade 9, Grade 10 she was a silly girl and a wolf in Beauty and the Beast. Now in Grade 11 she is practicing for her role in Princess Margaret’s, Wizard of Oz as the Tin Man.
Marissa Buckley, her volleyball coach, described her as kind and supportive, and beyond athletic ability as a great teammate. With COVID-19, it’s been a difficult year with little competition between schools, but she has made the most of it.
Brown enjoys her classes and understands what it means to comprehend what is being taught. If she struggles, she is willing to reach out to her teachers or friends and she’s not afraid to speak up either to give an opinion or ask for help.
Brown would tell you she is not academic, but she has begun to excel in all of her academic classes thanks to her competitive nature pushing her forward.
Brown grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister, and has quietly competed against them since she was small.
The Rotary Club of Penticton Sunrise understands the importance of our community’s youth and wishes to recognize outstanding students for unique combinations of achievement in scholastics, extracurricular activities, community involvement, leadership and service to others.
The club works with Penticton Secondary School and Princess Margaret Secondary School to select students who have overcome problems, made significant gains in their lives and are examples for others to follow.
This initiative is made possible with the generous financial contribution from Gateway Casinos as part of their proactive involvement in wide ranging community service projects.
