Penticton resident Marcia Gee will ride 200 kilometres during the month of August, hoping to raise $1,000 for the SickKids Foundation. Gee is participating in the fifth annual Great Cycle Challenge Canada which raises money for research for a cure for childhood cancers as well as better treatment options.

“This is the fourth time I have participated in the Great Cycle Challenge,” said Gee. “During those years, I rode 158 km and raised $1,539. This year, I am aiming to raise $1,000 and ride 200 km.”

“I do this each year because kids are our future,” she added. Already, Gee is half way to her goal.

Founded in 2016, Great Cycle Challenge Canada has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events in the country. In just four years, more than 63,000 riders from all provinces and territories have ridden 10.3 million km, raising more than $12.4 million for research, care and development of better treatments and cures for childhood cancer. This year, SickKids Foundation hopes more than 30,000 riders will take part in support of kids’ cancer.

“Cancer is the largest killer of Canadian children from disease and over 1,400 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer every year,” said Jamie Lamont, director of special events at SickKids Foundation. “Thanks to riders like Marcia, we’re feeling groundbreaking research to save lives and give kids the brighter future they deserve.”

This year GoByBike Week isn’t just about riding to work or school by bike. It is about all ages getting out riding and enjoying the fresh air for any reason. Ride to the store, your friend’s house, the lake, get on your mountain bike and ride a new trail, rent an E-bike and travel the KVR, ride for fun or for transport it all counts, just ride.
