An acclaimed Penticton artist will have a solo exhibition on display in his hometown for the first time in nearly 10 years.

If you’ve seen an old hot rod with a dragon hood ornament cruising the streets of Penticton this year, that would be local artist Glenn Clark in The Dragon Wagon, his favourite car.

Starting tomorrow (Dec. 1) locals will be able to catch a glimpse of Clark’s work on display at The Bench Market.

It’s been almost a decade since Clark had a solo exhibition in his hometown. Since then he has won a handful of prestigious awards, including Artist of the Year for both Central (2015) and South Okanagan (2014) and has been shown at galleries throughout Western Canada, Edmonton and Yellowknife.

He has painted over 20 murals, the best known of which is the one commissioned by the Elks Lodge featuring the Penticton Vees at the Brandenburg Gate when they won the 1955 World Championship.

Penticton Artist Glenn Clark will have his work on display at The Bench Market beginning Dec. 1, 2020.

An oil painter, Clark’s work covers a wide variety of subject matter including hockey players, en plein aire art, landscape paintings, mannequins, and even plastic depicting how the COVID-19 lock-down made him feel. Clark describes his paintings as ‘“an obsession in seeking challenge.”

His current challenge is to paint old vehicles in their full glory, replete with rust, lichen, moss, dents, scratches, stains and dirt against shiny chrome. These all come to life in Clark’s new series of paintings that feature the emblems on cars that have had their heyday.

Some of the images are a result of a visit in September to the Rust Brothers Restoration in Tappen, B.C. when Clark took the opportunity to photograph the rusty wrecks that riddle their yard.

Recently retired as the official ‘art proprietor’ at the Penticton Art Gallery, Clark now works from his purpose-built artist studio, where he paints, shows his paintings, and plans to give professional art instruction.

Clark’s paintings of rusty cars and their emblems will be on display at The Bench Market for the whole month of December.
