The Summerland Legion will hold a Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 11, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will look very different.

John Dorn, past president of the Summerland Legion, said the event will be similar to the Canada Day celebrations held on July 1, where participants gathered for a small ceremony which was recorded on video and then made available to the public.

The Remembrance Day event will be held at the Summerland Legion and will include a flag raising and reading of the names of those who died in military service.

Federal, provincial and municipal dignitaries will be invited.

However, the public will not be able to attend.

In addition, a gathering at the Legion after the ceremony will not be held.

Dorn said a video of the event will be made available to the public after the ceremony.

In advance of Remembrance Day, the Legion will hold its annual poppy drive, beginning Oct. 30. However, this year the Cadets, Scouts and Guides will not participate in a door-to-door poppy drive as has been done in past years.

This year, candles will be placed on the graves of Summerland veterans on Nov. 10.

Dorn said this is normally done on V.E. Day in spring, but because of the pandemic, the V.E. Day ceremony did not take place
