Record numbers show up to give Dragon Boating a try in Penticton

Enough people showed up that the organizers ran out of space on their three boats

A record number of interested people showed up Saturday morning at Skaha Lake to give Dragon Boating a try.

The Penticton Dragon Boat Festival team held a free session for anyone interested in giving the sport a try, and there were plenty of people who made their way down to the Skaha Marina to sign up.

So many people showed up in fact, that the organizers ended up running low on paddles, lifejackets and seats in the boats.

It was one of the most successful sessions in the team’s history, bringing in at least double their previous best.

By the time the newcomers were wrapping up their time out on the water, they were already racing their way back to shore.

For people who missed the free session, the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival team are also inviting people interested in dragon boating to join their upcoming Introduction to Dragonboat lesson set. Lessons will take place Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

This course will run from Aug. 10 to Sept. 2nd. Registration is now available and information can be found by contacting them via email at admin@pentictondragonboat.com, or calling Don Mulhall at 250-488-3100.

On Sept. 11 and 12, the 20th Penticton Dragon Boat Festival will run on Skaha Lake.

In some years, there have been as many as 80 different teams from a wide range of skill levels and competing out on the water.
