RDOS board supports bid for Chopaka sawmill

Area “B” Director George Bush recommended a letter of support for the development of a sawmill on LSIB land

Area “B” Director George Bush recommended a letter of support for the development of a sawmill on Lower Similkameen Indian Band land in the Chopaka area.

A Memorandum of Understanding between the LSIB and East Mountain Forest Corporation notes that Area “B” is in favour of the facility, which will provide harvesting, cutting and hauling employment for the whole valley.

The wood produced in the mill will be destined for Chinese markets, using species such as larch and ponderosa pine,” Bush explained to the board,“it’s for a niche market.”

The mill could generate up to 40 jobs, 19 at the mill alone.

A letter of support has already been procured from the Village of Keremeos.

The board carried the recommendation.
