PHOTOS: Barking success at Pets in the Park in Penticton

Kona Sankey, founder of Pet Friendly Penticton, organized Sunday’s pet-friendly event

What started as a ‘pet project’ for Kona Sankey five months ago has flourished in a popular community page and Pets in the Park which was a barking success in Gyro Park on Sunday.

Four-legged friends and their people were out enjoying the pet-friendly event.

From Kelowna Disc Dogs showing off their agility and frisbee talents to booths for pet chews, food and clothing to the founders of a Kelowna indoor dog park being created, there was plenty to view.

Penticton’s own Gotta Goat brought their fainting goats as well for kids young and old to pet and brush.

The day saw dogs of every size and their family members enjoying the casual event.

“Five months ago I started this passion project with a Facebook page Pet-Friendly Penticton and immediately the response was overwhelmingly positive. I saw the neighbourhood small grants were available and I applied so I could say thank you to the community. Leaps and bounds later we keep growing and already thinking about year two for Pets in the Park,” said Sankey.

While the Pets in the Park seemed to gather mostly dogs to the park, Sankey is actually a cat person.

“I have cats, I’ve always had cats but I enjoy animals in general. I wanted to create a community for like-minded pet people,” she said of why she started the page.

She has been taking her cats out in the community and has met all these business owners who were welcoming to pets in their shops or were just pet-focused. She managed to bring them all together for the Pets in the Park on Sunday.

Several agility groups from around the Okanagan came out to show the crowds their talents.

Off-leash Kelowna, story time with Coles, and numerous pet-focused and animal rescue booths were present at the park.
