The Auxiliary to the Penticton Regional Hospital Society has donated $78,000 to breakfast programs at local elementary schools.

The auxiliary society presented a $78,000 cheque to the Penticton Speedway Foundation Thursday (Dec. 3).

The Speedway Foundation acquired the “Breakfast Learning Club” from Meals on Wheels this past fall and rebranded it as the “Penticton Breakfast Club.”

The Penticton Breakfast Club coordinates and runs programs at Queens Park, Westbench and Columbia Elementary schools. They also provide some funding to all other schools in the district to help with their programs.

By having breakfast, students are prepared for learning on a daily basis, based on the principle that a hungry student is not equipped to learn and that a nutritious breakfast positively impacts student focus, concentration and behaviour.

The Penticton Breakfast Club aims to positively impact students’ overall health, school attendance and ultimately academic success.

The Breakfast Learning Club was previously run by Judy Jeffries, Sandra Henderson, Erin Beck and their team since 2011, when the Penticton School Board approached Meals On Wheels to provide nutritious breakfasts five days a week at three elementary schools.

Judy Jefferies and her team continue to operate Meals On Wheels, a non-profit community program, that is under the umbrella of the Auxiliary to the Penticton Regional Hospital Society. They deliver nutritious hot and frozen meals to those who are unable to cook for themselves.

Meals On Wheels is always looking for new volunteers, learn more about how you can help at mealsonwheelspenticton.org/#volunteers.

The Penticton Speedway Foundation has given back over $300,000 to the community in the past 10 years through the support of racers, spectators, local businesses and organizations.

The Auxiliary to the Penticton Regional Hospital Society also recently completed their pledge of $250,000 for the purchase of equipment for the David E. Kampe Tower and has now pledged to donate $100,000 for a trauma room in the emergency ward.

Donations can be made by purchasing tickets to the “Wonderful Winter 50/50 Raffle” with a draw date of March 1, 2021. To learn more an buy tickets go to the auxiliary website.
