A new Penticton business owner is going out of his way to give back to the community this holiday season.

Trevor Sparreboom, owner of the retro video game shop Game Cave, has pledged to donate a brand new Nintendo Switch Fortnite bundle to a deserving family in need of some extra help this time of year.

With many families struggling financially during this pandemic, Christmas will likely be a difficult time for many.

Sparreboom knows this and wanted to do something to help out while thanking the community for their support.

Sparreboom put out a call on social media asking people to nominate families who are struggling and deserve a bit of help to make their holidays a little brighter.

Sparreboom will choose the family he thinks will benefit most from the game console and deliver it to them before Christmas. All nominations will remain anonymous.

“2020 has been a very tough year for a lot of us, with everyone being affected, some more so than others,” Sparreboom wrote on social media. “This brand new Nintendo Switch Fortnite bundle will be donated to a local family who has had a tough time this year and perhaps can use a little extra Christmas help.

“If you are a family, or know of a family who could use a little brightness this holiday season, please send me a private message with a brief explanation for why you are making the nomination.”

He’ll be taking nominations until Dec. 18. However, choosing one deserving family may be more difficult than he initially expected, Sparreboom said. After posting to Facebook Wednesday (Dec. 9) morning, he’s already received nominations for close to 100 families.
