Community members from across the Okanagan Nation will have the chance to weigh in on the new Syilx family declaration at the Lower Similkameen Indian Band and Okanagan Nation Alliance Wellness Fair on July 30.

While the second draft of the declaration is still in the works, it will be completed in time for the wellness fair, said ONA child and family community planner, Kirsta Lindstrom.

There will be a presentation on the draft and community feedback is wanted.

“What we want is the public’s input from our communities so we will be doing a read-through of that,” Lindstrom said.

“We want to raise awareness and show the draft that we have. We’d like to get feedback on what they like, what they don’t like and what they would like to see changed.

“Because once we make those changes and gets a third reading and approved by chief and council, then it goes into law and that will be a framework on what will be a new child and family system.

“We want to make sure everyone has their input because if it’s not by the people then it is not for the people.”

The whole aim of the wellness fair is to have people come out and get to know the programs and services the ONA wellness department and the LSIB health and wellness team offers and to make connections.

The health and wellness teams will be on-site with booths set up letting people know about all the services and programs available to community members. A total of 10 to 20 booths will be set up.

“It’s a chance to get everybody to know each other and set up a booth and all the different services and resource materials and how we can better help each other,” Lindstrom said.

“If there is anything you want to know about the services that LSIB and ONA offer, for sure to come to check it out. You’ll get all the information you need, even if you can only stop in quickly and just grab pamphlets.”

For kids, the wellness fair will have face-painting, games and free lunch. There will also be door prizes and other activities.

It all takes place at the LSIB gymnasium on Tuesday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
