The Keremeos Elks’ expansive new hall is taking shape on the Rodeo Grounds just outside the village.

Since the ground for the new hall was broken in July, concrete has been poured and wood raised up as the new building is getting close to being closed over.

“We talked quite a bit about the hall, and what it would be about, and we decided if we build it, they will come. So we’re going to build it once and build it right,” said Bruce Dennet, the Elks’ president. “Hopefully we can do some good for the community and bring some business to our community.”

The new hall is 30 metres by 15 metres, and on the outside of the hall is an 18-metre by 3.6-metre extension for storage, bathrooms and a foyer. The extension was originally part of the hall itself, but it was decided to move it outside to keep as much room as possible.

The foundation has been poured, the walls raised, trestles installed and half of the roof has been tinned over so far.

The goal is to get the hall up and fully covered on the roof and sides with tin before the winter arrives.

“Once it’s up we have all winter to run electrical lines and plumbing lines and do the insulation,” said Dennet. “We need to have it in lock-up stage hopefully by mid-November.”

Members of the Elks and other volunteers from the community have been hard at work since ground was broken. In recent weeks, they have been spending as much as five to six days a week working.

“It’s a community effort, with lots of people showing up to help, it’s great,” said Dennet.

In addition to the volunteers who donated their time, local businesses have also donated some of the materials for the building as well.

Once the hall is finished, the Elks are looking forward to be able to host events in it, and hopefully bring plenty of people into the community.

“If we can get a trailer rally, or a truck show or something in there those people will come into town and patron the town so everybody benefits.”
