With around 13 years as members of the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department, Linda and Doug Dahl were recognized as January’s Volunteers of the Month by the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen.

With a history of volunteering on both sides of their family, the couple joined the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department in 2009 as a way of getting involved in the community they moved into in 2008.

Doug and Linda have now retired from KVFD and on behalf of the entire community, the RDOS thanked the couple for offering their time, expertise, and passion.

“Volunteering is a critical part of all communities, especially rural ones,” said Subrina Monteith, the RDOS director for Kaleden. “Linda and Doug have demonstrated the significance of volunteerism over the years by volunteering to make their rural community of Kaleden a safer place to raise our families by their many years of service.”

Volunteering with KVFD is one of many things that occupy Linda and Doug’s time. They are also involved in the FireSmart Program, the HUB — a community-sponsored initiative for knowing and responding to individual and family needs in the Kaleden community — the Gleaners Society, and the Bottle Depot.

They also participate in one of Linda’s true passions, the National Pitch-In Event. Every year this Canada-wide venture involves the cleaning up of community streets, parks, and trails and usually ties in with Earth Day and National Volunteer Week.

Although Linda has had many volunteer opportunities, one experience that stands out as a highlight for her is the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to volunteer at the 2010 Winter Olympics at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver.

Volunteerism is a critical aspect in helping the RDOS strive to promote its goal of supporting healthy individuals and communities.
