June 1 is Access Awareness Day in Keremeos

Access Awareness Day raises awareness of disability, accessibility and inclusion

June 1 has officially been recognized as Access Awareness Day in Keremeos.

Typically recognized on the first Saturday in June, Access Awareness Day aims to raise awareness about disability, accessibility and inclusion.

Mayor Manfred Bauer recognized the day in council on May 21 and also highlighted some of the recent accessibility measures taken in Keremeos.

Some of those changes include the amended Keremeos’ Business facade grant program to make accessibility improvements eligible for reimbursement in 2019; the Village Office, Information Centre and Victory Hall buildings were assessed and received Accessible Certifications from the Rick Hansen Foundation in 2019.

The village office also added an accessible, lowered public counter in 2018 and has installed accessible play features and park amenities, such as accessible picnic tables in their parks in 2017, he said.

In 2016, the village installed age-friendly and accessible exercise equipment in Memorial Park.
