After two quiet summers, Penticton’s Lakeside Resort is ready to make some noise this Canada Day.
Thanks to the success of a five-month-long community fundraiser, the resort has set aside a total of $25,000 for a special fireworks show at Okanagan Lake Park.
“For this year, we’re in partnership with many different community members who have pulled together to open up their pockets and sponsor the fireworks show,” said Elizabeth Cucnik, the general manager of the Lakeside Resort. “I’m incredibly proud of all the businesses and individuals who came together…it’s going to be an amazing day, we’re so excited about it.”
The show will begin at around 10 p.m. on July 1, according to Cucnik, who says people can expect a lot more than just fireworks by Okanagan Lake during the holiday weekend. Live music on the Barking Parrot’s patio, courtesy of Vancouver’s Paul Gibbons, is among the events featured in celebration of the country’s 155th birthday.
It’s been more than two years since the Lakeside Resort has been able to comfortably plan a special Canada Day celebration, amid the pandemic.
As a result, Cucnik says the response from community partners has been overwhelmingly positive, prompting the resort to easily hit its $25,000 fundraising goal.
Fireworks at the park will last about 20 minutes and run in sync with music from a radio station in real-time, the resort’s general manager added.
From July 1 to 3, people will have the chance to participate in Canada Day activities around the resort for the first time since 2019. Prize giveaways and the unveiling of a special birthday cake in the lobby will also be featured, along with the return of fireworks.
“We wanted to go out with a bang, no pun intended,” Cucnik said with a laugh.
