Ahead of the 262nd birthday of Robbie Burns, the Ploughman Poet of Scotland, the Penticton Scottish Festival Society is launching a new video series.
Experience the Arts - Exploring Scottish Culture in the Okanagan debuts on Shaw Spotlight Penticton channel 11 on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
The series will air several times a day each week, and each of the seven one-hour long episodes will feature a number of stories and segments reflecting the culture that people experience at the Penticton Scottish Festival.
Viewers can look forward to displays of Highland, Scottish Country and Irish dancing, youth and adult pipe bands, Scottish food demonstrations, Scotch tasting workshop, how bagpipes and tartan kilts are made, how and why Scots celebrate the poetry of Robert Burns and more.

When COVID-19 forced the cancellation of festivals and events, the Penticton Scottish Festival Society reached out to many of the area’s Celtic artists, musicians and dancers who were keen to participate in a video project that would give them a safe venue to connect with audiences virtually.
Watching the series serves as a warm up for a special watch party for Robbie Burns Day. A full take-out Burns Dinner is available from Bogner’s Restaurant, including of course the haggis that Robbie Burns’ addressed in his most famous poem.
The watch party will be hosted on the Shaw Youtube channel and as a watch party on the Penticton Scottish Festival Society Facebook page.
The Robbie Burns Supper in 2019 and 2020 were sold-out fundraisers for the Penticton Scottish Festival Society.
With over 40 years of video production experience under his belt local television producer Wayne McDougall, Penticton Scottish Festival Society vice-president, came out of retirement to record, edit and co-produce the series.
The series is co-produced by Kim Smith-Jones, an accomplished bagpiper and the manager and instructor of the Okanagan Youth Pipe Band and treasurer of the Penticton Scottish Festival Society.
