New resources to manage community-wide recycling efforts have been introduced by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS).
Recycling tool kits are now available for small businesses, apartment buildings and event hosts, after local studies on waste content indicated that the aforementioned places of interest may be throwing items like paper, cardboard, metal and plastics into the garbage.
It’s not just the environment that the RDOS is trying to help with the introduction of the tool kits — it’s people’s wallets.
“The high costs of landfilling means recycling programs are not only beneficial in helping the environment but often help save money in the process and conserves landfill space,” the regional district said in a statement.
It’s been four years since the RDOS started working with Kelowna-based company GreenStep Solutions to conduct public consultation on improving recycling efforts.
Small businesses, condo owners, event organizers and local governments across the South Okanagan were contacted as part of the region’s research.
“Consultation identified major barriers to better recycling programs, including a lack of information on what is recyclable and how to build and manage a successful program,” the RDOS added.
Information about the tool kits has been included in a short video created by the region.
“Less waste benefits us all and can help improve your bottom line,” it states in the video.
The introduction of the kits comes just two days before Earth Day 2022, on April 22.
