Penticton’s Dragon Boat Festival organizers are inviting the community out into the water this weekend for a day of dragon boat racing.
On May 14 at 10 a.m., the festival is hosting a free practice session for new paddlers of all ages at the Skaha Lake Park Boathouse.
“Participants will be taken out into the water and introduced to the basics of paddling in a dragon boat,” leaders from the festival said.
All equipment will be provided.
With the new dragon boat season right around the corner, the festival is inviting those unaware of the sport to try it out for themselves.
After a two-year hiatus, the Penticton Dragonboat Festival is returning at full capacity this September.
In a normal year, 80 teams and 2,000 athletes take part in the festivities at Skaha Lake.
“There is an opportunity for everyone to try out the sport and join a team,” the festival said about the upcoming practice session.
Those interested in learning more about local dragon boating are welcome to participate in an upcoming “Introduction to Dragonboat Lesson Series.”
Lessons will take place from May 16 to June 8 on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Newcomers to the sport are being asked to reach out to admin@pentictondragonboat.com for more information.
