A 47-year-old Penticton tradition is returning to Cherry Lane Mall this spring.

The mall’s annual vintage car show is back from April 4 to 9th after taking a two-year hiatus and organizers are expecting this year’s edition of the showcase to feature some of the world’s most historic vehicles.

“We’ll have the same 1951 Cadillac Convertible that Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh drove around in when they were in Vancouver in 1951,” said Dave Doman, the co-chair of the Cherry Lane Mall Car Show.

The Penticton-based showcase was cancelled for the first time ever in 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before that, though, the vintage car show ran for 44 consecutive years at Cherry Lane Mall.

Nine cars will be featured at this year’s show, with the public’s vote being the deciding factor in who will take home the prestigious winning trophy.

Organizers received close to 500 votes last time over the course of the week-long showcase. The 2022 edition of the vintage car show will conclude on April 9.

Among the other vehicles set to appear in Penticton this spring include a 1934 Ford Cabriolet and a 1940 LaSalle, made by Cadillac.

Doman, the owner of the LaSalle, added that his car was among the last ever to be made before General Motors discontinued the brand’s production shortly after its release in 1940.

“There was 1570 of those made in 1940 and that’s the last year they produced it,” he said.

“I found one in Kelowna out of all places about six months ago and it’s been professionally restored from the ground up.”

Cars will be displayed starting at the mall’s Save-On-Foods and continued to be showcased through the middle of the building.

All nine vehicles are owned by individuals who live “from Kelowna to Osoyoos,” according to the event’s co-chair.

“It’s a very small show and it only runs for one week but it encompasses everything about cars,” Doman said.

“We are unique because we are a vintage show, and that’s it.”

The newest vehicle at the Cherry Lane showcase will be a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle, while the oldest is expected to be a 1929 McLaughlin-Buick.

Members of the public interested in watching the show, voting for the winner and interacting with local car lovers can do so for free during standard mall hours from April 4 to 9.
