Pathways in Penticton is hosting a barbecue fundraiser this Saturday, Sept. 17.

After a successful inaugural barbecue fundraiser in May, Pathways Addiction Resource Centre in Penticton is firing the grill back up Saturday, Sept. 17, to serve up more hamburgers.

Though Interior Health defunded the organization in 2021, leaders from the centre say the future for people who need help is bright thanks to its community partners and scheduled fundraisers.

Pathways sold more than 200 burgers at its barbecue last spring, raising a total of $5,000. Saturday’s upcoming fundraiser runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 996 Main Street.

“If this weekend’s event is anywhere near the success of the last one, then there will definitely be more of these,” said Lee Pixley, a board member at Pathways.

The money raised on Saturday will be used to pay for counselling services for the people who can’t afford it, Pixley added.

After Interior Health’s rejection, Pathways received support from local businesses like Barley Mill Brew Pub. Thanks to the weekly meat draw every Sunday, the establishment raised a total of $23,000 for the non-profit group in June.

Pathways suggest a minimum donation of $5 for a burger Saturday, but Pixley says if someone arrives hungry with no money, they’re not “going to turn them down.”

The barbecue will feature water, soft drinks and a well-known, homemade barbecue sauce that Pixley says was a hit with donors last time around.
