An anonymous donor is challenging the community and matching donations to the Lower Similkameen Community Services Society to support the ongoing Ambrosia housing development.
The donor, the latest of many who have supported the project since before it began, will match all donations until Dec. 31, up to $25,000. Private donors have been a cornerstone of the Ambrosia project.
“We’ve continued to receive anonymous donations large and small since the inception of the project,” said Sarah Martin, the LSCSS executive director. “Private donors stepped forward to purchase the properties we needed to respond to B.C. Housing’s request for proposals.”
Any donation, as small as $5 or $10 and as large as $1,000, will be matched.
“One local family came in yesterday and between them there were five cheques all for a couple hundred dollars each,” said Martin. “Over the recent days we’ve seen a number of donations rolling in response to the challenge.”
The LSCSS is looking to raise $500,000 to cover the lease for the commercial and office space in the Ambrosia development to move some of their programs there once it is completed. So far, over $280,000 has been raised.
The Ambrosia development will provide a mix of affordable and subsidized housing for the community, including a number of fully-accessible suites.
With the windows placed, the siding on the building will soon begin.
