For homemade baked goods and donairs, Keremeos residents can now try out BoBoys on 7th Avenue.

The take-out joint selling everything from donairs and subs to pies and cinnamon buns opened last Monday.

Owners Debbie Atkinson and Jonathan Opazo said the set up is an open concept, so people can see their food being made.

“They can see me making the food so they know that it is not frozen brought-in garbage,” Atkinson said. “We roast the beef. We roast the turkey. We make the bread for the donair. We make the sauces and the dressings. We do homemade cinnamon buns and homemade pies. They are all done old school so it is something you would get from your grandma or your mom.”

The name, BoBoys, is the nickname for Opazo’s dog Clarence.

Atkinson previously owned a restaurant in Okanagan Falls but decided Keremeos was a better fit.

She went to culinary school almost 20 years ago and got a lot of her inspiration for cooking and baking from her travels in Canada and the United States.

The husband-wife duo opened BoBoys because they felt they could offer something completely different from anything else offered in the village.

“We just want it to be a friendly happy place and I think that new businesses coming to town attracts more business and more consumers. People will come from other places and have a donair and then try other businesses in town. New business creates more business and that’s one thing really needs to happen here.”

Before opening, Debbie and Jonathan tested every recipe in their repertoire.

“We tried different recipes and tried them out on friends and family. I took recipes I gathered from Halifax and tried them. Basically, we tried and tested almost everything we have before we put it on the menu.”
