Summerland sees increase in violent crimes

RCMP statistics for third quarter of 2021 show changes in crime trends

The number of violent crimes in Summerland has increased, according to the latest statistics from the RCMP.

The statistics show the total number of calls for police service in Summerland is higher so far this year than during the same period in 2020. From January to September, there have been 2,441 calls for service, a 10 per cent increase over the 2,210 calls for service during the first three quarters of 2020.

However, during the third quarter alone, the number of calls for service fell slightly, from 984 calls from July to September 2020 to 939 calls during the same time frame this year.

Violent crime figures rose by 23 per cent during the third quarter of this year.

There were 20 cases of assault, an 82 per cent increase from the 11 cases of assault in the third quarter of last year.

The number of sex offences declined from nine during the third quarter of last year to one during the third quarter of this year.

The number of cases of uttering threats increased from 12 in the third quarter of 2020 to 13 in the third quarter of this year.

Domestic violence cases fell from eight during the third quarter of last year to six during the same time frame this year.

The number of property crime incidents is almost the same in 2021 as in 2020, falling from 151 in the third quarter of last year to 150 in the third quarter of this year

Auto theft numbers decreased by 53 per cent, from 17 cases to eight cases. Thefts from vehicles fell by 33 per cent, from 36 cases to 24 cases.

All break and enter categories saw increases during the third quarter of this year. Mischief to property also showed an increase, rising by 33 per cent from 33 cases in the third quarter of 2020 to 44 cases during the third quarter of this year.

The statistics are part of the RCMP’s Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen Regional Detachment’s quarterly report. Statistics from all communities in the region are compiled in the quarterly report.
