From Penticton to Princeton — find out what your community is doing for the 100th Remembrance Day

Wondering where you can pay your respects this Remembrance Day?

Here’s a list of events taking place throughout the South Okanagan commemorating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the First World War.

Penticton

The ceremony will be held at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, with doors opening at 10 a.m. Those planning to attend are asked to be seated by 10:15 a.m. as the service will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Prior to the ceremony, veterans will march from the Penticton Curling Club to the PTCC. After the service, veterans are asked to return to the Penticton Curling Club.

Okanagan Falls

Beginning at the Community Centre at 1141 Cedar St., the parade will depart at 10 a.m. for the Legion, located at 5009 Veterans Way. The cenotaph service will follow at 11 a.m. with the laying of the wreaths. Attendees are invited back to the Legion following the ceremony for food, music, and visiting.

Oliver

An interdenominational service will take place at the Community Centre, located at 6359 Park Dr., beginning at 9:45 a.m. The parade to the cenotaph will commence at 10:40 a.m. with the service and wreath laying ceremony taking place at 11 a.m. At 11:40 a.m., attendees will return to the Legion for refreshments. Youth participating will receive a ticket for a cookie and hot chocolate from Subway and at 2 p.m. there will be a free family movie at the Oliver Theatre.

Princeton

The Remembrance Day parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. with the ceremony to follow in Veterans Square at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony at the Legion Hall, located at 170 Bridge St., will be a lunch featuring guest speakers.

Summerland

Those planning on attending the ceremony in Summerland will meet for the parade form on Wharton Street at 10:30 a.m.

The march to the cenotaph will commence at 10:45 a.m. in Summerland Memorial Park with the ceremony starting at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony will be a free luncheon featuring entertainment at the Legion, located at 14205 Rosedale Ave.

The Summerland Museum will be opening its Second World War exhibit entitled Summerland Remembers the Defenders of the Empire. Attendees can check it out from 12 to 2 p.m. and meet guest curator Paul Randall, the exhibit’s creator. Admission will be by donation.

The “Bells of Peace” will ring at the Holy Child Catholic Church at 4 p.m. The Legion will also be hosting a turkey dinner beginning at 5 p.m.

Tickets are available in advance at the branch for $15 each, veterans eat free but are asked to pick up a ticket in advance as well. The branch will also be accepting food bank Christmas hamper donations until Dec. 15.

Keremeos

The Remembrance Day parade will depart from the Legion at 510 Veterans Way at 10:45 a.m. with the ceremony to follow in Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited back to the Legion for a hot lunch and refreshments.

Youth refreshments will be available next door at the Elks Hall.
