Submitted Quick action of a homeowner and the Keremeos fire department stopped a couch fire from spreading and destroying a garage on Middle Bench Tuesday night.

The couch was ruined but the garage was saved thanks to the quick action of the homeowner and nearby firefighters.

The Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a couch fire on Middle Bench Tuesday night around 5:30 p.m.

“The fire trucks got out their quick. The occupant and a friend used a fire extinguisher and were able to pull the couch out of the garage,” Jordy Bosscha, fire chief of the Keremeos department said.

The fire crew checked out the garage to make sure nothing else had caught fire and also pulled the fans out to ventilate the garage and house.

The road was closed while the fire crew was on scene.

“We blocked the road because Middle Bench is fairly narrow and there are people who like to follow the flashing lights,” he said.

Firefighters were finished on scene about 7 p.m. just in time for the weekly fire practice.

Bosscha said the fire was not deemed suspicious.
