Penticton RCMP are investigating a pair of unrelated assaults during the past week including one involving bear spray.

The first occurred June 16 around 10 a.m. in what appeared to be a random attack by four or five people on a lone 17-year-old male.

Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth said the male was walking along the bike path near KVR Middle School looking down at his phone when the incident happened.

Police were initially flagged down by a person in a vehicle and discovered the passenger had been assaulted with injuries to one eye and an ear.

The victim had called friends after being attacked. He was co-operative and said he did not know his attackers.

There was not believed to have been a motive such as robbery and police are looking for witnesses or any other information that might help them identify those responsible.

The other assault happened just after 3 a.m. June 17 when a 15-year-old male bear sprayed three 19-year-old males.

The male responsible was identified and is known to police for similar matters according to Wrigglesworth.

Police also talked to members of the victims’ families who were reportedly would not co-operate with police investigators.
