Covert Farms Family Estate took home four golds and one Top Gold medal for its 100 per cent organic estate grown wines at the eighth annual International Organic Wine Award in Germany.

Competing against more than 1,000 wines from 25 different countries, Covert Farms’ 2013 Grand Reserve Zinfandel earned 96 points and a Top Gold medal at the competition. Other gold medal winners include the 2014 Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon scoring 94 points, the 2013 Amicitia at 92 points, the 2014 Grand Reserve Pinot Noir at 91 points and the 2015 Grand Reserve Roussanne at 90 points.

“We are super excited about this win because it compares us against our international peers,”said Covert Farms winemaker and co-proprietor Gene Covert. “Organic winemaking takes a lot of dedication and can have some higher risks, so to have the opportunity to see where we stand on a world scale is affirming.”

Covert Farms was the only Canadian winery to enter the competition, which uses a combination of expert judges and a sensory evaluation system known as the PAR system.

Covert Farms has been making organic wines for more than a decade. The winery, owned by Gene and Shelly Covert, is located on a 650-acre parcel of land in Oliver. The Covert’s respect for the biodiversity of the vineyard’s ecosystem has led them to farm with organic and biodynamic practices, use minimal intervention during the vinification process and where possible, utilize of indigenous yeasts.

This is the first time Covert Farms Family Estate has entered their wines in the German competition.
